What to know about Cape May beach weddings

If you’re thinking about a beach wedding, here are a few things you should know:

• You must reserve a time slot for your wedding.
• You’ll have 30 minutes for your ceremony.
• You can bring in accessories like chairs and an arbor.
• The City only permits beach ceremonies, not receptions.
• The beach is public land. The City doesn’t grant exclusive use of any location, so you won’t have the beach to yourself. Strangers can observe your wedding and other events could happen simultaneously nearby. You aren’t permitted to remove people from the ceremony site or the surrounding area.

Fees and scheduling your wedding

The City charges a fee to use any public space for a wedding. This includes the beach. They will not refund ceremony fees.

You’ll need to schedule your ceremony for the specific beach location you’ll be using. Call (609) 884-9534 or visit the City’s site for more information.

The City’s online booking engine allows you to choose 30-minute time slots from 6am through 10pm. If you don’t have an officiant in mind, Cape May’s mayor and deputy mayor are available for a fee.

For an oceanfront setting, consider the Beachfront Ballroom at Cape May’s Convention Hall. You’ll have an indoor location with gorgeous views of the Atlantic, your choice of vendors, and room for up to 380 guests. And if you were hoping for an outdoor ceremony, you’re in luck: They can be set up on the boardwalk-style deck that surrounds the hall, so you’ll have the feeling of a beach wedding—minus the sand in your shoes.

Due to its location on Beach Avenue, Convention Hall has limited on-site parking.

Your two-hour reservation includes setup and clean up. Use of the gazebo is for nuptials only, but reception space is available in the park’s pavilions.

We know aesthetics are important, so here’s what it looks like: The gazebo itself is painted white inside and out and has a bit of gingerbread trim; the bridge and decking are gray. It took us eight strides to cross the interior, and there’s space for additional guests on the surrounding deck.

Good news: The gazebo has electricity! We spotted an outlet mounted on the inside.

Slightly less good news: There are a lot of geese in the area. Watch your shoes on the path leading up to the bridge and the grass near the pond. You might step in something.

This 244-acre state park is free to visit year-round. You probably know it as the home of the Cape May Lighthouse. (Please see the lighthouse’s page for ceremonies in the lighthouse itself).

Cape May Point State Park has picnic facilities available. For groups of 20 or more, you can rent a space for your party that can seat up to 60 people. Submit a Group Picnic Reservation at least five days before your event. Please note that alcohol and smoking are prohibited throughout the park. There are also no trash receptacles, so you’ll need to bring a few trash bags and take them (filled) with you.

The park offers free on-site parking in a dedicated, paved lot.

Cape May Point is a popular spot for weddings! The borough allows special events at Cape May Point Pavilion Circle, the beaches and beach platforms, and any site approved by the Borough Commissioners.

What to know about weddings in the Point

• All locations are public and are not closed to the general public while your wedding is going on.
• Events can last up to 4 hours, including setup, breakdown, and cleaning.
• You can have a maximum of 100 people (participants and guests) and 100 chairs.
• To keep events low impact to the environment, chairs and equipment must be carried and set up by hand. You must not disturb the grass or dunes.
• No living creatures or balloons may be released.
• Rice is not permitted, but you may toss bird seed or other biodegradable materials.
• Alcohol is not permitted.

How can I schedule a wedding in Cape May Point?

To hold any special event in Cape May Point, submit an application for facilities use with the borough clerk. The borough must receive your application at least 30 days prior to the event.

How do I know if the location I have in mind is within Cape May Point?

The borough provides a map on their website that clearly outlines its boundaries so you can determine if the spot you have in mind for your wedding is within Cape May Point.

A few locations are often mistaken for being in Cape May Point when they’re actually in Lower Township or on State land. These include the Cape May Lighthouse, Sunset Beach, and Cape May Point State Park.
