For many people, there’s no better location for their dream Cape May wedding than the beach!

A wedding ceremony on the beach in Cape May

What to know about Cape May beach weddings

If you’re thinking about a beach wedding, here are a few things you should know:

  • You must reserve a time slot for your wedding.
  • You’ll have 30 minutes for your ceremony.
  • You can bring in accessories like chairs and an arbor.
  • The City only permits beach ceremonies, not receptions.
  • The beach is public land. The City doesn’t grant exclusive use of any location, so you won’t have the beach to yourself. Strangers can observe your wedding and other events could happen simultaneously nearby. You aren’t permitted to remove people from the ceremony site or the surrounding area.

Fees and scheduling your wedding

The City charges a fee to use any public space for a wedding. This includes the beach. They will not refund ceremony fees.

You’ll need to schedule your ceremony for the specific beach location you’ll be using. Call (609) 884-9534 or visit the City’s site for more information.

The City’s online booking engine allows you to choose 30-minute time slots from 6am through 10pm. If you don’t have an officiant in mind, Cape May’s mayor and deputy mayor are available for a fee.

This 244-acre state park is free to visit year-round. You probably know it as the home of the Cape May Lighthouse. (Please see the lighthouse’s page for ceremonies in the lighthouse itself).

Cape May Point State Park has picnic facilities available. For groups of 20 or more, you can rent a space for your party that can seat up to 60 people. Submit a Group Picnic Reservation at least five days before your event. Please note that alcohol and smoking are prohibited throughout the park. There are also no trash receptacles, so you’ll need to bring a few trash bags and take them (filled) with you.

The park offers free on-site parking in a dedicated, paved lot.

Visit the state’s website for more information and to access the current reservation form.

Cape May’s Rotary Park offers multiple backdrops for a ceremony, from the Victorian-style bandstand to the Travelers’ Fountain. The park’s paths, dotted with wood and metal benches, are laid in red brick and gray pavers. Decorative black metal fencing surrounds the perimeter. In the evenings, the park is lit by old-fashioned gaslit style streetlights. Come summer, the park’s hydrangeas and other seasonal plantings are in bloom.

At the holidays, Rotary Park is strung with white lights and is home to the city’s Christmas Tree.

We asked the City, and yes, you can bring chairs into Rotary Park. No receptions, though. Ceremonies only.

To reserve a ceremony time, please call (609) 884-9534 or visit the City’s site for more information. Rotary Park is a public space. Reserving it for a wedding does not grant solo-use, so you could have strangers observing.

The City’s online booking engine allows you to choose 30-minute timeslots from 6am through 10pm. And please be aware that according to the city code, there are no refunds given on ceremony fees.

Sunset Beach, located at the very end of Sunset Boulevard, is known for Cape May diamonds and the SS Atlantus wrecked offshore. The beach is free to visit and dog-friendly in the off season, but due to underwater hazards, we don’t recommend going into the water. Sunset Beach has a small on-site parking lot and will be crowded in warmer months.

Despite its proximity to Cape May Point, Sunset Beach is actually in Lower Township. We can’t find anything in Lower’s code book that would restrict a wedding at Sunset Beach. Please contact the township directly with any questions about weddings in this location. Alcohol is prohibited on all Lower Township beaches.
